They walked along in silence as they left the village holding hands. The crickets chirped loudly competing with the sounds of waves crashing along the cliffs. An owl flew across the road in front of them as Odette led him towards a little clearing that they had found along the deer path.
âIn here,â she pushed through the brush and came out into the clearing. âNo one will bother us here.â
The clearing was lit up by the moonlight and she led him to a downed tree. She paused, trying to think of the best place for him to be when she told him. Motioning towards the tree, she said, âPlease, sit down.â
He sat down and was watching her pace back and forth. He spoke up, âOdette, just tell me. It really canât be as bad as youâre making it seem.â
You have no idea, she thought. Itâs probably worse than youâve been imagining. Finally she stopped pacing and stood in front of him. âIâm really not sure the best way to tell you and I donât think thereâs any way I can say it that will ease you into the idea.â She paused again, wringing her hands. Looking around, anywhere but Eric, she saw Alexander, Bruce, and Charles all stand up just inside the tree line behind him. All of them had taken their harnesses off and their wings were out.

I donât want to offend you,â he rubbed his hands on his pants, âbut when we were kissing in the market I had my arm around you. Your back,â he paused looking for the right word, âit felt odd. Is this about a birth defect or was there an accident?â
She started to answer him and he cut her off again, âIf it is something physical that youâre afraid to tell me because you think it will change how I feel about you, I can promise you that it wonât. Iâve really enjoyed my time with you and I think that youâre beautiful. Nothing will change my mind about that.â
She held up her hands to stop him, shaking her head, âItâs not like that.â She thought for a second and said, âThis will probably be easier if I show you. Close your eyes and donât peek. Donât open your eyes until I tell you to.â
âOkay.â He bent his head and closed his eyes.
âDonât look.â She reached back and started unbuckling the harness as she spoke, âI was really surprised when you came up to me at the archery competition. I know Alexander has explained to you that Iâm here looking for a husband and Iâm assuming that if you werenât looking for a wife that you probably wouldnât have introduced me to your family. Am I correct?â
A slight hesitation and then he answered, âYes.â
âSo when I heard
